Running Power Meters… First Impression

Being on the bleeding edge is exciting. But you can also get cut deep (hints the “bleeding” part). Power meters were once bleeding edge technology, but today they are common sights. Ask experienced cyclist or triathlete the best upgrade they can make, and they will (should) tell you to get a power meter (If you don’t already have one). But running power meters? That’s bleeding edge!

There really are only a few names in the game right now as it comes to running power meters. The big name is Stryd, now on their second gen unit. The other is RPM2. A few others are out there, but they are more fringe and aren’t specifically power meters like Lumo run and SHFT. The biggest question hanging over running power meters is, are they worth it? 5 of my Top Posts- 100th Post Celebration

Today I just realized that my post this week was number 100 on! Crazy to think I’ve already made it up to number 100.

And to celebrate, I want to look back on 5 of my tops posts (according to view statistics)

1. Super League Triathlon Pro Race Report
This is my most viewed post, and for good reason. Super League triathlon is a big deal. It has the potential to make big waves across the sport. I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series turns out. Check it out to see my thoughts on the race.

2. Hammer Nutrition: Fully Charged Product review
To be honest this one has taken me a bit by surprise. I was not expecting it to be so popular, but since it is a fairly new product on the market, people want to know what it’s like. Thanks to for hooking me up for the review! Check out the post and see if it’s something you would like to try (and use the code TEAMSHARE15 to get 15% off at Trisports)

3. Finish Line Super Bike Wash Product Review
Another product review in my top posts. I think people just like to see other’s experiances and know what they are getting. I use this stuff every time I clean my bike. Love it!

4. A Tour of My Pain Cave
This is another fun post. I give you all a tour of my “Pain Cave” or my trainer set up. This has changed a bit since the relocation. It’s so much sweeter now. I’ll have to revisit this one soon.

5. Zwift and FTP Tests
Zwifters are fanatical! It really has grown quite the following over the short time it’s been on the market. I beta tested it, but am no longer on the program. Still, it’s a great program you should check out!

I hope you all enjoyed this trip down memory lane! I sure did! Thank you all for reading the blog as consistently as you do, and if you are new around here, subscribe to stay up to date on all that happens. Here’s to the next 100 posts!

Pro race- Super League Triathlon

While this blog is focused on helping athletes learn from others and make progress in the sport, I do like to take some time and focus on general news in the Triathlon world. Very few things have grabbed more attention in the past few years than the new races series known as Super League Triathlon. In my opinion, anything that can get more people interested in the sport, the better. That means grassroots efforts like USAT’s High School club program, as well as events like Super League. So what is this new event and what is it so special?

Trisports University Post- A Spectator’s Guide to Triathlon

Hey guys,

Just wanted to give y’all a quick Saturday update! Trisports just posted one of my articles on their educational page Trisports University. It is the Spectators Guide to Triathlon.

This is a perfect article to share with your fan club or anyone else who may be going to watch you race. I have to admit, I had a little help on this one seeing as I have never spectate a race. So my wife gave me these pointers. She’s a real trooper and has been to all of my races but one, and most of those she drug along our little peanut for the ride. Do you can trust these as coming from an expert in the Triathlon Spectating field!

I hope you enjoy the article and glean some tips for your next race.

Don’t forget to check out Trisports for all your Triathlon needs. They are your one stop shop for anything Swim-Bike-Run! And don’t forget to use the code SHARE15 for 15% off everyday!

Free 6 Week Triathlon Training Plan

Earlier this week I wrote about 3 ways to jumpstart your fitness for the new triathlon season. Well, here’s a 4th.

Today I’m releasing a FREE 6 Week training plan to get you ready for your first (or next) triathlon. The plan is primarily focused on those training for a Sprint Triathlon, but it will work just as well for the 6 weeks leading up to your next sprint before diving into some intermediate or long course racing.

In this plan I use all the same philosophies I use in my coaching and especially the 3 main workouts for time crunched triathletes. This is a great resource for you as you dive back into training or if you are just getting started. I hope you find this plan useful and that it helps you learn from my mistakes!

So get your FREE 6 Week Triathlon Training Plan!

We’re Back Online!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to give you all a quick update on all the goings on around here. A lot has happened in the last month, and the last week specifically, so to make this a little more digestible, I’ll go to bulletpoints!

  • We had a baby!! (If you didn’t already know that… go brows through the most recent posts like this one and you’ll see what you missed)
  • We moved! Yep, I got a new job and we moved about a week ago. As such I’ve been spending the last week not only getting things in order in our new house, but in the new office as well. Things have been a little chaotic, but it seems to be getting back to normal… or at least the “new normal.”
  • We did battle with an internet service provider. Yeah… no fun. I spent hours on the phone after the technician failed to show up for the original appointment. No one ever came to the house from that company, so I ended up canceling and going with another company. They had someone out to the house within 5 hours! Needless to say, I’m very happy with their service so far, and I can actually get on on blog some more!! Who Hoo!

So on that note, I hope you are all still tuned in a ready for some great content. Thank you for being patient over the past few weeks as we adjust to our new little bundle of joy and make this transition. Things have been quiet over on social media too, but with our internet back up, Twitter should be lighting up with all the new content I’m catching up on! I’d love to hear from you, so hit me up on Twitter or in the comments!

An quick update

Hey guys,

I just wanted to drop a quick line to give everyone an update on what’s going on around here.

Things have been a little quite… and for good reason. My wife and I just had our second child! Our baby girl was born last week and mom and baby are doing great! We’ve been game adjusting to being a family for 4 now… which is a big change… more than you would think.

So I haven’t forgotten you, and there are some really exciting things in the pipeline still, so hang in there and make sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss any of the action!

Looking ahead in 2017

I just wanted to get some information out there for you guys to know what to expect here in 2017! We’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline, but January is going to be a crazy month for me, so it may be a bit until things get back to normal around the blog. So here’s what to expect:

   1. Reviews- I’ve got some awesome reviews in the pipeline. You may have noticed on Twitter that I’ve been running in some wonderful new socks from Balega. I also have been testing out a set of elastic shoe laces from Riplaces. Those two reviews will be coming up soon! Also in the pipeline are the new wheelset from Profile Design, nutrition from Honey Stinger, among others 🙂

     2. More Racing- I hope to be racing a bit more this year. With a toddler and a new born, we’ll see how that works out, but I’ve got my eye on a few more races this year with less traveling, so that will be a plus!

     3. A Beginner Sprint Triathlon Training Plan- I’ve been working on a new training plan that will launch soon! Make sure you are signed up for my emails (not the ones through WordPress, but the ones directly from me) so that you can have access as soon as it’s out! Use this link or the form in the sidebar to sign up or update your preferences.

     4. More Coaching Articles- This is going to become a bigger focus of mine. I’ve started with the post on pedaling drills and the technical side of riding with a power meter. But keep your eye here for some more training articles as the season progresses!

What else would you like to see from my this year? I want to write things you’re interested in! Let me know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

This is the time of year that we all take stock in the year that is past and look forward to the year ahead. It’s also a time of New Year’s resolutions that are almost all destined to fail. I don’t tend to get wrapped up in all the hubbub of the New Year. I enjoy the celebration and I look forward to what is going to happen in 2017!

I figured I run down some of the highlights of my year and then some things I’m looking forward to in 2017.

2016 Highlights

2017 Highlights

  • A new addition to our family
  • Long Course Duathlon Nats (Again)
  • ITU Long Course Duathlon World Championship (or Ironman 70.3 NC… still up in the air)
  • Trip to Germany in late summer/ early fall

What were your highlights of 2016? What are you looking forward to in 2017? Are you making any resolutions? Let me know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter!
