For this edition of Friday Reviews I wanted to drop a quick not on a book I just finished: The Triathlete’s Training Bible 4th Ed.

     The big selling point for this book is that it is totally revamped with the latest in sports science. Joe Friel even states in the preface that some of the things he says in this latest edition CONTRADICTS some of the information in the older editions. He talks about that in-depth in the intro and how readers of his blog would be up in arms about things he would write that contradict older info in his books.

     The basic reason for this is that as sports science gains better information and studies either prove or disprove long held training philosophies then the athletes and coaches training should reflect that to a degree. Fitness is always a moving target and the more we learn about the human body, the better we can hit that target at the right time for our “A Race.”

     I can say, having read the 3rd edition, that this book truly is a total rewrite! I read it all cover to cover, and while a lot of the information is the same, the presentation and explanation is different, and I learned a lot more than if I had simply re-read the old version. Also, He was right in saying some things have changed in the Sports world over the years, and that was reflected in the book. I even found some things I am now changing in my training that I had previously done based on the info in his 3rd edition of the Training Bible.

     At the end of the day, I think this book is a great buy for anyone who is serious about training for a multisport event! Even if you have the old edition, I’d pick up a new one.

     Also, I’d recommend getting a hard copy of the book. I got the 3rd edition in Kindle form, and I find the multitude of charts and images so much more helpful on paper than on a Kindle or the computer. The workout reference is a lot easier to check in paper form as well.

     There is a reason this book made it on my Triathlete’s Christmas Gift Guide. Having finished it already, I’d say it would make a great gift! I am not getting paid anything to write this review. I bought the book myself and read it all cover to cover (minus the glossary and bibliography…) I honestly think this is a great book for anyone who is serious about training and racing!
